In Visible Fellowship by Jon Walker

I was contacted by Leafwood Publishers to see if I would be interested in reading and reviewing In Visible Fellowship for them, due to my previous review of Eric Metaxas' book on Deitrich Bonhoeffer.

Having never heard of Jon Walker I went into this blind, but was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.  In Visible Fellowship is set in a format that can be applied in various settings.  You can read this for spiritual edification, within a group setting, or as a class.  There are 36 chapters that are designed almost as short lessons that touch on unique aspects of the Christian faith journey.

What was pleasant about this book is that I found it very enriching to my walk of faith in Jesus Christ.  While prefacing every chapter with a quote from Deitrich Bonhoeffer, Jon Walker takes you deeper than most books do.  He asks the tough questions, while at the same time keeping it simple enough for even the new believer to follow along with.  I also believe that this book is good enough that I will retain it for future reference or study.  There are a lot of little nuggets in this book that can be mined; and it is good enough to refer back to in the future, where you actually might glean further truths from that you missed the first time.

The only negative to this book is that the author chooses The Message translation, as well as Today's English Version for a vast majority of his scripture quotes.  Walker uses several other translations as well, which I found interesting, considering that in his copyright page, he only references the NIV as his translation of choice, but chooses to rarely refer to the NIV.  Perhaps this is just a personal preference, but I would have preferred that Walker stick with one translation of scripture, rather than jumping back and forth between two or three different ones.  All things considered though, this does not distract or take away from the overall body of work encompassed in this book.

I would not hesitate to recommend this book for anyone wishing to deepen their walk with Christ.
